Who is Sheldon Kotyk?

All about Me.

I was born at a very young age in Winnipeg, Manitoba. After deciding that it was too cold a few months later, I convinced my parents to move to Regina, Saskatchewan. Although this did not help the weather issue at all it did allow me to grow up and use the ice to my advantage and begin skating and eventually play hockey.

After my brother (Scott) was born less than a month after my fifth birthday, I left Regina and took up residence in Estevan, a few miles north of the North Dakota / Saskatchewan border. My parents decided that at five, I wasn’t old enough to do this on my own so they moved with me and brought the new kid.

When he turned five (I was ten, if math isn’t your thing), we moved to beautiful Squamish, BC. It’s the McDonalds between Vancouver and Whistler. Well, at least that’s what it used to be, now its a vacation destination all by itself, being the home of the Spit (wind surfers) and the Chief (Rock Climbing). Its a great place to visit but living there was painful.

A Sporting Time

Life in the prairies as a kid meant one thing. Hockey. I played hockey on ice, on the street, on the ice on the street, and sometimes even at school. However, I wasn’t a one sport child. I played soccer, baseball and loved to water ski. As I got older I curled, played tennis, and even went through a season of Football. Yet, the most lasting involvement in sports started around the age of 14 when I began officiating Ice Hockey. For some reason, I was almost good at it and even at this time I am spending hours every week, getting paid to skate up and down the ice and get yelled at.

There is a God, I’m not Him

My parents aren’t perfect, but the most important thing they taught me was about God. At the age of five, in my kitchen after getting back from Sunday School, I asked my mom about Heaven and she explained to me about how I could be sure that when I died, I would go there. The other thing she taught me which goes along with this decision is living a life that God would be proud of. Although I am continually making mistakes in life, I can be sure that God is forgiving me of those sins and I can be sure of where I am going to spend eternity.

Home Sweet School

The two major things in my life that have defined me are hockey and God. I’m not a scholar and I didn’t enjoy studying, homework, or even tests. I know, I’m weird. So when the opportunity presented itself to leave Squamish for grade 12 to go back to the prairies, it wasn’t so English and Math would have my undivided attention, it was to see where Hockey could take me. Caronport High School is a private school just outside of Moose Jaw, which is just outside of a bunch of farms and the Trans-Canada highway.

Hockey didn’t take me anywhere as a player, but the time hanging out with the people that I was going to school with, made the year at CHS an enjoyable time. Plus, God was using it as a stepping stone to the place he wanted me to go for College. BBC, Briercrest Bible College, is where I decided to attend, not for a degree, but to see what I wanted to do, plus a year of Bible School was a dream of my mom’s for me so I decided to appease her prayers.

Again, it was the fellow students that made me want to go back and even though I technically wasn’t planning on graduating, I went back for a second year. I did eventually graduate with a BA in Sports Ministry, but how that happened is a long story and if you want to hear it, you’ll have to ask.

My First Web Site

One thing that got me involved on the internet was when I built a web site for Youth Quake, a large youth event held at Briercrest. This little web site and the fact that I had built it, was another stepping stone for where I am now.

Jobs and Hobbies

Two weeks before I got the piece of paper that said I guessed right enough times on my finals, I was accepted onto the staff of Campus Crusade for Christ, Canada, to work with Athletes in Action. The staff of AIA taught the Sports Ministry program so it was an easy transition. I’m still working for CCC but I am now in the internet department called TruthMedia. I’d throw a resume up on the web for interested companies to look at but I’m not leaving so sorry. For more information on what I do at TruthMedia, check out my Ministry section of this site.

Best Friends

I still referee a lot, and I volunteer at my church as a youth leader. I build web sites and love to watch shows on TV that make me think. C.S.I., Law & Order, and Hockey Night in Canada are my favorites, and not necessarily in that order.

Getting Married

How did this couple meet?

Best Friends

After 27+ years of being single, I decided to ask my best friend Julie, to marry me on December 16, 2002. She said “OK” and on May 9, 2003 we got hitched. If you want to know how we met, you can read the story here. A very short version is that through a series of events that God had to put together, her brother was showing her how to use ICQ and I was the person they decided to chat with. That was May ‘99 and its been four years of being best friends and we’re now spending our lives together.

Would I recommend meeting someone online? Well, not really. Julie and I met online but it wasn’t something either of us were trying to do. It’s not until one stops trying to meet their mate and lets God do it in his timing that God can make His will happen.

Bagged a House

We went house hunting and bagged a beauty. We bought my uncle’s townhouse in Abbotsford and now we have 2800 square feet of space to clean. There are four bedrooms, one was turned into an office and a very nice TV room downstairs. The sauna and soaker tub are barely used although the tub comes in handy after a hard day of eating. ‘Before’ and ‘After’ pictures are available if you care to see the transformation the interior took after we moved in.

Pooping Everywhere

Well, just under eleven months after getting married we had our first of possibly more than one and less than four kidlets. Kristin Amy Kotyk was born on April 5, 2004 at 05:56. Check out the bambino pages for more information and pictures.

Things I have learned about babies:

  • They eat a lot, way more than their digestive systems can handle.
  • They fill their diapers continually.
  • When they aren’t sleeping, they are eating and/or pooping.
  • The cute smiles they give are signs they are pooping.
  • Burping is important, the bigger the burp, the better.
  • They are sure cute when they aren’t screaming in your ear while trying to burp.
