How Sure are You?

Cross posted from my Facebook note.
As I was driving home from work today, for whatever reason, I started to reflect on the day that I became sure that I was saved and would one day go to heaven.
It was about 5 years ago, and a friend of mine, Mike, asked my girlfriend and I to go through a work book on what it means to be a Christian and how to be saved. I have to admit, at first I was pretty offended that he thought I had such little understanding of such basic Christian principles. Although I had led a pretty ‘worldy life’, I felt I had grown alot in knowledge and wisdom since becoming a rededicated Christian a few years prior to that . After all, being saved is actually a pretty simple process.
I knew that I was a sinner. “For all have sinned and fall short of the Glory of God” Romans 3:23, “for there is no one who does not sin” 1 Kings 8:46.
I knew that Jesus died for our sins and that I needed to repent (ask forgiveness) and that there was nothing that I could do, no good deeds, pay money ect to get to heaven. “Not by works of righteousness that we have done, but according to His mercy he saved us” Titus 3:5 “Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life, but whoever rejects the Son will not see life” John 3:36. Pretty basic right?
Then one of the questions in the book threw me. It asked, “If you died tonight, how sure are you that you’d go to heaven? 25%, 50%, 75%, or 100%. I actually had to stop and think about that. I wasn’t 100% sure. How could I know for sure?
In the bible, John 14:6 says that Jesus said “I am the Way, the Truth and the Life, no one comes to the Father except through me.”
The real clincher for me was found in 1 John 5:13 “I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may KNOW that you have etenal life.” That was the moment I knew where I would go when I die. I was and am SURE I am going to heaven.
How sure are you?
