iPod Shuffle Workaround for iTunes 7

NEWS FLASH: iTunes 7.01 has been released. See Hope Different.
I have the first generation iPod shuffle and here’s what I did to get it “working” with iTunes 7 in XP.
UPDATE: Commenter playclever has informed me that this has also worked for the iPod Video.
I had been getting the error -50 when trying to update or edit settings and the error -1418 when trying to restore.
Others have been having the problem as you can see on the following discussion forum which may or may not load for you.
- Create the playlist you want. This workaround will only allow you to update the shuffle once.
- Connect the shuffle. Chances are you’ll get an error trying to update. (error -50 was mine)
- Let iTunes throw its hissyfit then go to the settings tab and click restore. The progress bar will start flying.
- Quickly unplug your shuffle, wait a second then plug it back in. After a few seconds it should be recognized by iTunes restore and the progress bar will slow down and complete.
- When it asks for a name, enter your wish but make sure autofill is not checked (unless you want a random sampling from your library.
- Go into the content tab and choose the playlist from the autofill section at the bottom of the screen. Choose autofill. It should update.
Let me know if this helped you. Looking forward to iTunes 7.01.

Hi! Thanks for this, it saved me a lot of hassle!
I actually have a Video iPod and had the same problem, so you might want to update this to mention that fact :)
Thanks again!

I’m glad it worked for your video iPod. My 5G 30GB has not had a problem at all. I’ll update the entry though.

Mine was a 5G 30GB too. iTunes 7 really is a piece of crap - first time around I didn’t let the “gapless playback” complete and it was crashing left, right and centre…

Ouch. I haven’t had issues with it other than my shuffle not syncing but I’ve seen enough on the Apple forums to realize that it wasn’t tested nearly enough.

Didn’t help my ipod shuffle 512mb that has the 1418 problem.

boomer: are you running itunes 7.0 or 7.01. Is it recognizing the shuffle when you try the restore?

HA!!!
After WEEKS of trying to fix this … the ONLY solution that works is the official Apple fix, and yes, IT WORKS!!!
