Adventures in Aldergrove

So last night I was back on the ice with stripes on for the first time in a couple of years. It was good to strap on the blades again and actually do something I enjoy that involves exercise.

Being away from officiating was a useful thing for me as the abuse had started to get to me. My last three games of the 2002-2003 season involved police escorts out of Nanaimo vs Surrey Jr. A, Rocks thrown at my car after doing a Juvenile Provincial game and more threats in Chilliwack.

I picked up my level 5 the next summer but hung up the blades after realizing that my wife was prego and the child (Kristin) was going to be born in the middle of the playoffs.

So last night I’m lining a Bantam A game between New West and Aldergrove. I had expected to go down a few times and make a few mistakes (hey, its preseason and I am rusty.)

Mistake 1. After dealing with some equipment issues at the end of the first, I began the second period with a close offside at my line. I threw my arm up and went to blow my whistle. Unfortunately, it was still in my pocket. DOH!

Mistake 2. I threw my arm up in the air to notify my partner of a potential icing. He didn’t respond and when I looked at the clock, I saw that there was a penalty on the board. DOH! I put my arm down and play went on. Then I realized that the team that iced the puck was on the power play. DOH! DOH!

Toe Pick. It wasn’t actually a toe pick. I was skating backwards to my line to be there for a close play and caught an edge. I’m thankful to Tim from PGHockey.com for supplying me with some protective padding to save my elbows.

Ok last comment was rejected because I forgot to fill in my name but when I went back to correct the error my comment was gone. Minus 1 point for poor user experience.

I think my comment went something like this:
Sheldon admits to seeing The Cutting Edge at least once. Wow. Was that pre- or post- wedding?

Minus 2 points for Claire for having a PEBCAK error.

Yes, I saw The Cutting Edge once. I stayed awake for at least half of it even.

Hall dates @ Briercrest and the girls planned it.

I believe the next hall date we ended by serenading them with “I still haven’t found what I’m looking for.”

[...] As mentioned previously, my first double of the season was going to have me reffing the second game. I have to admit, I really wasn’t looking forward to wearing the bands without a few more games under my 40″ belt. [...]
